Ten years ago I had my first Internet connection at home. My friend Johannes had helped me to set it up, using a modem that was already somewhat old and slow back then and connecting to a modem located in some office and used by two other persons besides me.
This was quite cheap at first (I had got the modem from another friend, and there was no extra fee to pay besides the normal local phone connection). But because it was so slow, I used so much connection time that just that local fee finally added up to a quite serious amount, boosting our phone bill by a few hundred percent.
A few months later I got myself an ISDN card for my computer, which took eight hours to set up (thanks to its plug and play feature) and helped reduce connection time and cost with its higher speed.
